8th Baltic Stratigraphical Conference

The 8th Baltic Stratigraphical Conference, organized under auspices of the Baltic Stratigraphic Association jointly by the Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of Latvia, North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, and Natural History Museum of Latvia, was held in Riga on 28-31 August 2011. Field excursion to the most attractive sites of the pre-Quaternary and Quaternary rocks including the first Geopark of Latvia was planned for September,1-2 2011.

Stratigraphy is one of the major disciplines of the Earth Sciences. It is many-sided and closely related with cartography, palaeontology, sedimentology, and regional geology, all of which constitute a network of their approaches.

All contributions related to geology and stratigraphy of the Baltic region, were welcome. The number and topics of sessions were defined depending on the interest and number of talks. The topics of primary interest were:

  • Bedrock and marine geology
  • Biostratigraphy and palaeontology
  • Event stratigraphy
  • Isotopic geochronology
  • Palaeoenvironments, palaeogeography and climates
  • Quaternary geology
  • Regional aspects of applied geology
  • Regional aspects of the international timescale
  • Regional stratigraphic schemes, correlation and stratotypes
  • Sequence and seismic stratigraphy
